COLLECTIVITIES

Collectivities

Written by: Ruth Rangel

Collectivity: a gathering of bodies, voices, and dreams. In youth, this desire to belong, to have a voice and a voice, pulses more intensely. To be is to belong, to affirm the body in change and movement. It is in this fertile ground that collectivity flourishes—among affections, exchanges, and formations that are built with each encounter.

At the Urban Dance Meetings, promoted by the UDES, it was possible to encounter a diversity of bodies with different experiences of dance: young people and adults who were already dancing, others trying their hand for the first time, and even passersby who happened to cross the meeting space. A space of freedom of expression, where bodies met and allowed themselves to experience new things through dance.

In the UDES collective, urban languages intersect, combine, and multiply, always with the purpose of valuing the individual and their uniqueness. Each person is challenged and encouraged to be the protagonist of their own experiences, within and through dance. The collective facilitates the encounter of stories, bodies, and diversities that create verses and movements. The choreographies and narratives emerge precisely because these bodies are willing to dream and create together, with each individual's individuality respected.

Each step taken together affirms who we are and what connects us. It's a celebration of the encounters that shape us. Between audience and dancers, there are bodies in motion and attentive gazes: dance, a space for the individual and the collective, connects us through art, dreams, affection, desires, and hope.
